About this Course
An MPhil and PhD course represents an extended piece of research into a particular aspect of Welsh language or literature. A typical MPhil dissertation is between 30,000 and 60,000 words while a PhD dissertation is between 60,000 and 100,000 words.
Each student is assigned a research director and is scheduled to meet regularly throughout the student's registration. A regular series of seminars will be held for the active postgraduate community of the School of Welsh where there will be an opportunity to share information about student and staff research projects.
You can do an MPhil or PhD in Creative Writing, which includes a substantial creative portfolio and a piece of self-critical research based on the creative project. Recent projects include a history novel, a contemporary novel and a collection of poems, and a series of essays.
Careers
For a number of years, a number of students at the School of Welsh have been pursuing MPhil and PhD courses sponsored by European sources, which has led to many valuable links with companies and organizations such as Canolfan Cae'r Gors, Cwmni Da and the North Wales Slate Museum. Other schemes were formerly sponsored by the Welsh Language Board and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. Other students won AHRC scholarships and Bangor University's 125th Anniversary Scholarship fund
After successfully completing their MPhil or PhD, many alumni have gone on to work in various fields in recent years, eg promotional posts with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Bangor University Academic Registry and Trinity St David's Recruitment Unit , or language planning with Menter Môn. Others went on to develop their careers as writers and gained recognition in the form of the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize and the Book of the Year Longlist. Over the years research students from the School of Welsh have had successful careers in a variety of fields, whether in the media, education, administrative or political.

Each application is considered individually, but emphasis is placed on an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and / or relevant previous experience. An MA in a relevant field is also a desirable qualification, although it is not always necessary. |
