How to Block All Websites Except a Few Windows 10

  3. Web Content Filtering

I have a network that has ten Windows 10 Pro computers. I would like to block internet access to all websites except a few (6 or 7 websites).

Different computers will be allowed to access different websites, for this reason I would prefer to use the hosts file in each machine to do this.

Currently I am using the hosts file to block the usual "bad" websites but this is no longer working. This method would only work if I was a mind-reader.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Can you do this via your firewall?

OpenDNS, but instead of blocking everything, just whitelist what you want to be available.

Could also do this from the firewall depending on what kind it is.

Put a proxy server between the clients and the internet, you can then specify by AD groups or AD user, IP address, subnet etc who can go where, when and for how long at what times of the day etc.

Down to your preference

Hi Rod-IT,

Clearly your solution is much more advanced than I am, I am new to networking. Can you explain how to do this step by step or maybe point me to a tutorial/video?

You'd be as well just Googling proxy servers, they come from free to paid, easy to use to complex.

Squid is a free one not too difficult to use, but there are many out there.

Providing a guide would be difficult as you need to first choose your package

Thank you very much, I will start with squid.

It is going to be more effort to setup a proxy, but it's done and can be as customised as you like, once in place you can change it at will.

We are not using a physical firewall, each machine has: Malwarebytes Premium, Avast Premium and windows built in firewall.

Rod-IT

How are machines connected to the internet then - even if it's a basic router it has a firewall on it

I wrote a Knowledge Base article on this several years ago for Avast Business, and the same settings can be applied to all consumer and business versions of Avast:

Hi Rod,

They are all connected to: Zyxel 24-Port Gigabit Switch | Smart Managed | Desktop/Rackmount and Fanless | VLAN, IGMP, QoS [GS1900-24E]

All hardwired.

Rod-IT

But that must connect to a router or firewall to be able to get out to the internet

Rod-IT

That router should have a firewall on it, if it does not and you are saying those machines connect unprotected to the internet, you'll want to fix that first, though i do believe the router, even if this is a consumer/residential ISP's one, will have some type of firewall built in

You can enroll your Windows 10 Pro devices into an MDM solution where you can block websites remotely except few. This is also known as website whitelisting where only certain websites run on devices.
